Kennel Club ABS

Attention all Members of NWLRC.

The Kennel Club has issued some guidelines on the Assured Breeders Scheme (formally the Accredited Breeders Scheme) a summary is below but read on for the full text.

"The Kennel Club's Assured Breeder Scheme (formally the Accredited Breeder Scheme) is now well established and has in excess of 7,500 members.  To encourage further uptake of that scheme, and thus ensure good breeding practice, the Kennel Club recommends that breed club Code of Ethics should include a recommendation that the club members should join the Assured Breeder Scheme.  Ideally, a clause as follows should be included:

"Members will, when breeding dogs, adopt as a minimum standard the principles, requirements and recommendations as embodied in the Kennel Club's Assured Breeder Scheme.  It is strongly recommended that members breed should apply to join the Scheme"

We would also suggest that an article about the ABS is included in a club newsletter, or Year Book and the additional clause is included as a proposal at the club's next AGM, for the members approval."

This will be added to the AGM for consideration by Members next year.

Race for Life

Jenny Dobson, long-standing member and committee member of the NWLRC will be taking part in the 2011 Cancer Research UK Race For Life, in memory of Sheila Saunt, and of all those absent friends from the world of showing and breeding labradors, including Val, June and Janice, who have lost their lives to cancer.

RACED FOR LIFE.......

Done it.....ran the Race for Life and finished in about 36 minutes.....not exactly record breaking, but not bad for a first attempt.

Rain held off till after the race was run, and there was a great atmosphere.

Many thanks to everyone who donated, and helped me raise over £100 for Cancer Research.

Dog Health Group's First Annual Report

The Kennel Club’s Dog Health Group has published its first annual report which details the continuing progress that is being made towards improving pedigree dog health.

The Dog Health Group has been tasked with ensuring that dogs are bred to enjoy healthy, happy lives. Its work includes continually updating the Kennel Club Accredited Breeder Scheme so that dogs are bred responsibly and well, and researching and monitoring the health of dogs so that the relevant tests and tools can be developed to help combat certain conditions. It also involves ensuring that dog showing and judging is a positive force for change.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “The Dog Health Group plays a seminal role in influencing Kennel Club policy and guiding the health projects with which it gets involved, so that it can ensure the best outcome for dogs. The Group is made up of – and works closely with – breeders, human and dog geneticists and veterinary surgeons.

“Over the last year our priorities have been to make changes to ensure that our Accredited Breeder Scheme is more robust than ever, so that puppy buyers have confidence about who to buy from and that dog shows only reward healthy dogs in the show ring. We have also continued to invest in the life-saving work and research that is being carried out at the Kennel Club’s Canine Genetics Centre at the Animal Health Trust and developed new strategies to continually improve genetic diversity."

Kennel Club - Changes to Code of Ethics

The Kennel Club has released a new code of ethics that all breed clubs are required to adopt without delay.  As this is a Kennel Club directive, the NWLRC does not need to call an EGM or AGM in order to agree and adopt this new code.  It is a requirement that this is adopted immediately and as such it will become a requirement of all club members to be bound by this mandate.

Note on 15 February 2011, the Kennel Club General Committee reviewed the Code Of Ethics and made the change to Clause 2 as underlined below.

This takes immediate effect on all members.

Sheila Saunt Memorial Trophy 2011

This is the NWLRC's annual points challenge. Open to all members. (1 point is awarded to every exhibit for each class entered (and present), and 5 for each class winner down to 1 for VHC place).

The Limit show is where you can maximise your points by entering many classes, as the CC holders cannot enter!

Points can be won at the Open and Championship Shows later this year when it is a broader competition and hence more difficult to gain as many points, so if you want to get a head start the Limit show is the one to get stuck into!!
