DIARY OF EVENTS 2016

NWLRC 24-DOG 2-DAY OPEN QUALIFYING STAKE AT HY FLY 14/15 NOVEMBER 2016

Judges, Stan Tweedy (A), Keith Bedford (A) Mark Polley (B) and Keith Barnes (B)

After the terrible weather of the first day, the second day couldn’t have been more different.  We walked out in bright sunshine and a light breeze with all 6 dogs in the line; the going underfoot was very wet, muddy and treacherous.   Phil Highfield was the only casualty of the morning when Vilendal Zak of Featherfly failed on a partridge in the beet and was eyewiped by Sharon Dingle’s Bellspaddle Intrepid.  We walked on and the team of 7 guns shot a variety of quarry including pheasant, partridge and snipe.

All the five remaining dogs worked very well and consistently on differing retrieves from stubble, beet and rough ground.  Mr Ingram’s Ragweeds Aston  of Fendawood handled by David Latham pulled off a stunning retrieve on a running partridge, going  straight to the fall and then tracking it at least 100 yards round the field when the bird got up  and the dog picked it in the air.

After all dogs had completed 7 retrieves over the two days of trialling, the judges called the trial over   Kevin Hughes took the Guns on further to make up the bag and everyone who had a dog with them followed on to do a bit of picking up which finished the day so well.

The judges admitted they had had a very difficult decision to make and I have to say that the Secretary stood waiting for the result for quite some time whilst they deliberated!

When we returned to the yard, Sandra Halstead judged the five remaining dogs for the Maureen Wilkinson Trophy for the Best Looking Dog in the Awards, which was a lot of fun and was won by Sean McGrath’s FTCh Waterford Hallmark.

First       David Latham handling Mr Ingram’s Ragweeds Aston of Fendawood.

Second                 Sharon Dingle handling Bellspaddle Intrepid

Third      Scott Marland Handling Greenbriar Tame

Certificates of Merit to Leigh Jackson handling Kenquartz Charmed and Sean McGrath handling Waterford Hallmark FTCh.

Guns’ Choice was Bellspaddle Intrepid.

The awards were presented by our President Mr John Halstead who had also been part of the excellent team of Guns who shot for us on both days.

North West Labrador Retriever Club 15-dog Novice Trial at Chatsworth on 3 November 2016. Winner Jamie Van Alstine and Eiderbay Humber, Second, Reuben Mort and Fendawood Feller, Third and joint Guns’ Choice Glenn Main and Glanwold Ophelia, Fourth and joint Guns’ Choice Brian Dodsworth and Hazeloaks Widgeon. The winner of the special raffle drawn at Chatsworth on 7 November was Ian Griffiths. It was a framed, limited edition print of pheasants flying in a winter landscape by artist J I Harrison.

Many thanks to all who bought tickets. Raffle raised £207 for Field Trial Funds.

We thank Mr & Mrs Winstanley of Trekkers Gundogs for donating the picture. They are generous sponsors of the club.

Result of the NWLRC 15-dog Novice Stake at on the Chatsworth Estate on 7 November, by kind permission of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.
Judges John W Halsted, Lynn Mitchell, The Duchess of Devonshire and John Benyon

First and Guns’ Choice Trevor Gibson and Mindgames Red Storm

Certificate of Merit – Ken Littlemore and Labdom Scoter of Middlebrook

Grateful thanks to the Duke and Duchess, and to their staff who provided a delicious lunch in the field, and to the Keeper and his staff and the team of Guns from the Chatsworth Syndicate. Thanks to everyone who turned out to help. It’s always a special day at Chatsworth, but my “team” today mad it particularly so.

Just as we were in the middle of the last drive, the rain came down in stair rods, there was sleet in it as well, doing the awards in the rain was a nightmare and definitely lacked a bit of gravitas, but we got through!

Congratulations, Trevor and Ken. Well done indeed.

14-dog Novice Trial at Mellor nr Blackburn.
Driven duck and walked-up pheasant. Thanks to Brian Redfern and his team of guns and Lee Redfern and his team of beaters. It was a Redfern family outing and they did us proud.

Judges were John Drury, Stan Tweedy, Lisa Marson and Nathan Laffy

Unfortunately we didn’t get a first. The conditions were testing. As the afternoon wore on, the wind got up and the rain came down harder! Mind you, we didn’t complain too much as we were just too glad it was so much better than yesterday! Comiserations to all who had to endure the weather conditions for NW Counties trial at Hy Fly yesterday.

Results 2nd and Guns’ Choice Scott Marland and Greenbriar Tame.
Third, Margaret Pearce and Woodsprite Druid of Esmoro
CoM Wayne Skett and Emmanygan Ultra.

Thank you everyone who turned out to help. The NW Labs Field Trial Committee was there in force. Wonderful support.

The postcode and directions for the NWLRC Novice Trial on 22 October 2014 have changed. Competitors and officials have been notified by post and/or email. Please contact the Hon FT Sec if you need further information.”
